“PB directly involves local people in making decisions on the spending priorities for a defined public budget. This means engaging residents and community groups, representative of all parts of the community, to discuss spending priorities, make spending proposals and vote on them.”
Put simply, Participatory Budgeting empowers local people to play a key role in deciding how public money is spent on projects and services in their neighbourhoods.
In practice, this can range from funding community and voluntary groups to deliver projects of local value to allowing residents to shape what, and how, mainstream services are delivered in their areas. The amounts of money involved can be anything from hundreds to many millions of pounds
