Willow Weaving – Top Hat Basket

Added by

Denmark Farm Conservation Centre
on 13th September 2021

Please note this activity has expired.

This is a handy sized round basket perfect for a quick trip into town or to pack a small picnic on a day out.

On this two day course there will be plenty of time to complete your Top Hat Basket and enjoy learning some new techniques. There should also be time to make an additional smaller basket to reinforce your new skills.

You can choose from a variety of naturally coloured willow to make your own unique and beautiful basket.

You will be learning traditional ‘stake and strand’ basket making, using prepared basketry willow plus some grown at Denmark Farm Conservation Centre on the wetland system to add colour and texture.

This workshop is suitable for people who have previously done some willow basket weaving and beginners are also welcome.

All tools and materials provided. If you have your own sharp secateurs and a knife, please bring them along. Please wear warm old clothing.

Willow basket weaving

Tutor: Jane Welsh

Jane is our guest tutor from Devon, usually visiting West Wales to teach at Denmark Farm twice a year. Jane is a very skilled basket maker and attentive teacher. Her knowledge and love of willow is inspiring. She will also have a range of her own baskets for sale at very reasonable prices.

See Jane’s website here.

“I had forgotten pretty much everything about basket weaving and I took part in this workshop to remind myself so that I can continue at home. I now can continue! The teaching was very good, Jane was observant, informative and careful to ensure reasonably high quality results. Denmark Farm is a top venue with great facilities”. Blue Morgan

“Thank you so much for arranging the basket making course. Jane is an amazing and thoughtful teacher. She gives everyone her undivided attention and responds to what they want to do and their level. It is relaxing just to be with her and I learn so much. A big thank you! It was like a mini-holiday.” Jane Johns
