Would you like to make a difference to children and young people in your community?

Sandy Bear is a Welsh bereavement charity that supports children and young people who have been bereaved. We work across Wales (subject to funding) offering support to ensure that children and young people have the best outcomes after someone they love dies.

What is the role?

The role involves supporting the practitioners when they see children and young people on a one-to-one basis and helping in the support groups run by Sandy Bear. The groups either take place one day a week in 5-week blocks throughout the year or are held over two/three full days. These are dependent upon local demand and funding available. Family support volunteers assist the service delivery team with activities which can include making a memory jar, a story board, reading age-appropriate books on death, and talking about the loved one.

The role will include

  • Talking to children/young people and their adults.
  • Supporting the Service Delivery Team with activities
  • Supporting the children and young people with the activities
  • Supporting the adult carer (children’s groups only)
  • Helping to set up the craft activities
  • Group sessions usually take place in the week during the day (often afternoon)

What do I need for the role?

  • Enjoy talking to people
  • Empathy
  • Good listening skills
  • Work as part of a team of Sandy Bear volunteers and Service Delivery Team

Why Volunteer for this role?

  • 2-day bespoke training in supporting bereaved children and young people
  • Regular support from the Sandy Bear Team
  • By supporting Sandy Bear, volunteers make a huge contribution enabling the charity to work with many more children, young people and families when they most need us.
